Bishop Willie James Jones
Bishop Jones attended Trenton Public Schools and has pursued further training at Mercer County College, Middlesex College, Rider University and Moody Bible Institute.
Bishop Jones joined the U.S. Navy in 1965. His first duty station was Great Lakes, Ill. Chaplin department, Special Assistant to the Rabbi Rickel and studied under him for 12 months, as well as service to other churches in the area. He was then transferred to Norfolk, Va. He joined the New Hope C.O.G.I.C. and became their first organist. He organized the first concert choir and conducted their first concert. New Hope Church was pastured by Bishop H.C. Clark. Bishop Clark was Bishop W.J. Jones’ personal mentor and friend. Bishop Jones remained a faithful loyal servant at New Hope until he was released from active duty in 1969. He served all of the churches without salary and was always happy to serve.
Bishop Jones has served in many capacities from church janitor to Senior Pastor. He now holds the title of Presiding Bishop and the National Executive Board Chairman for the Church of Christ Written In Heaven. (C.O.C.W.I.H). Some of his ministry includes, founder & pastor of Grace Church of Christ W.I.H., Pastor of the Historic Holy Cross Church of Christ W.I.H., NJ State Diocese Bishop of the C.O.C.W.I.H., past President of the National Y.P.C.W. of C.O.C.W.I.H., International Foreign Missions Bishop of C.O.C.W.I.H., past president of The Concerned Pastors and Ministers of Trenton & Vicinity, organizer of the “United In Mission” Rally held at the “Water Front Park” in 1996, Delegate for President Clinton’s Summit for America’s Future in 1997 and completed several overseas mission trips, past President of the Interdenominational Ministerial Alliance Of Mercer County (IMA) and led citywide march for the Churches Against Violence in 2005. His radio ministry has a 50 minutes broadcast every Sunday and Tuesday over the radio station of W.I.M.G. and over the internet connection to thousands more which are not from this area. His television ministry is taped every Tuesday night and aired every Sunday morning at 9:00 am on Comcast television channel 190. He feeds the Homeless every 2nd Sunday and is in partnership with Farmers Against Hunger where food from various farmers are donated and distributed to the needed every Thursday afternoon. He has served in the ministry and the community for over 50 years.
History of our Church
The Holy Cross Church was founded on January 1, 1952 by Elder Joseph B. Walker. Through the friendship of Mayor Holland (who was not mayor at that time) found a place for worship. It was located on Grant Avenue in the second floor classroom of the old Grant School. A humble beginning the first sermon preached was by Elder J.P. Jones. His subject was “Dig Again”. About a year and half the church purchased the old Princess Theatre. Much work was needed to be done; cleaning, painting and repairing. In the Spring of 1953 the church marches out of Grant School to their new location. What a day of joy.
Through continued hard work and prayer God blessed them with 12 small churches, 4 of which are still functioning with us today. They are New Holy Cross Church, Lord Jesus Love Temple, Mt. Carmel Church and Gethsemane Temple. In the year 1957 and 1958, Elder Walker and the church held a council meeting with the late Bishop J.C. Blakely and because he knew and loved Bishop Blakely, they merged with the Church of Christ Written in Heaven organization.
The following month, Elder Walker went to the Holy Convocation in Jacksonville, FL and was consecrated and ordained a bishop by Bishop J.C. Blakely and the elders of the Church of Christ Written In Heaven. He was appointed as one of the Assistant Bishops of the Church and the bishop of the Northern Diocese.
The church purchased a rest home at 45 Model Avenue in Trenton, NJ and sold it in 1962. The church then purchased a rest home at 311 Bellevue Avenue in Trenton, NJ.
Tragedy struck in 1970 to Holy Cross Church located at North Clinton and Meade St by a server fire. It was in 1970 that the church purchased and moved to 63-65 Mulberry Street. However, in 1971 the flood ruined the newly renovated church. Services were held in the Rest Home for awhile but it was too small. But God was still moving!
Some drastic decisions had to be made. In October 1971, the New Holy Cross Church was born. Much work had to be done. Finances were low, considering the giant task that lay ahead.
The Members of New Holy Cross moved to East State St & North Clinton Ave. The plumbing and electrical fixtures had been torn out, and most of the windows had been broken. God has blessed the congregation to renovate the building beautifully, inside and outside.
